David Bowie Inspired Wedding Photoshoot

August 24, 2020

I first learned about David Bowie around junior year of high school. That was in 2004, and it was all the rage to make CD mixes for friends and significant others. I received one of these mixes and Starman was one of the songs. Sure, I had seen Labyrinth as a kid and knew who he was, but I hadn’t ever really dived into his music or message.

Let me tell you about how my mind was blown learning that Golden Years (featured in one of my all-time favorite movies, A Knight’s Tale) was by him. It took going through college to really give The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust a listen, and I fell in love.

I love everything he stands for: his chameleon personality, trying on new faces and personas like trying on a new dress, his voice, his glam, and his fearless creativity.

I specifically remember being on our honeymoon with Nick at the beginning of 2016 and lamenting about the state of the world. I said, “At least David Bowie is still here with us.” He was on my mind because his final album, Blackstar, had just been released.

I don’t remember exactly what day it was, but we were relaxing in our condo and Nick looked at his phone and said “Oh no. Bowie died.” We saw our friends back in Texas on social media out at bars taking shots for him because it was very late at home. People sent me messages. I cried and cried. I remember “The Prettiest Star” playing in my head over and over and looking up at the Hawaiian night sky and the two of us saying, “The Starman has returned to the stars.”

So yeah, I love David Bowie, and I always will. This is why I wanted to host a Bowie inspired styled shoot. I don’t do styled shoots very often, but when I do, they support a vendor team and/or concept that resonates with me. I probably won’t ever plan one on my own again (because wow – wedding planners, you have the hardest job in the world!), but I’m so grateful to this team for pulling off this shoot with me and making my vision come to life!
